Dedication of the Allene Sykes Memorial Garden

by Scott on August 6, 2012

On July 25th the Allene Sykes Memorial Garden was dedicated in memory of Mrs. Sykes, one of the founding members of St. Mary’s Church.  The garden is located on the north side of the church and contains a large boulder which Allene originally placed in the flower garden at the “old church” on Congress Parkway.  At Allene’s insistence, the boulder was moved to its present location and surrounded by beautiful roses, which Allene loved and nurtured.

A plaque honoring Allene now adorns the boulder. Allene was instrumental in establishing the Catholic Church in McMinn County.  She also established St. Mary’s RCIA Program and actively participated in the program for over 25 years. (click either image to view a larger image)
