Introduction to Lectio Divina

by Scott on June 22, 2009

SANY0115Dr. Ruth Queen Smith from John XXIII Catholic Center at the University of Tennessee provides an inspirational and practical introduction to Lectio Divina, a Latin phrase (pronounced lex-ee-oh di-vee-nuh) that can be translated “divine reading,” “spiritual reading,” or “sacred reading.”

Although it’s long, this is worth listening to. Dr. Smith had the audience totally engaged during this 2 hour session.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download MP3

You can listen to the entire recording by clicking the play arrow on the audio player above, or by downloading the MP3 file for listening on any MP3 player. Once the green download line at the very bottom of the audio player indicates the entire session has been downloaded to your computer, jump ahead or backwards in the recording by clicking within the audio stream (where it displays “Track #1″ and the play time). Some portions of the recording are difficult to hear, as we weren’t able to get a mic to everyone who commented or asked questions.

Download the handout from this session.

You’ll find several books about Lectico Divina at Amazon.com, but the one that Dr. Smith recommends is Conversing with God in Scripture: A Contemporary Approach to Lectio Divina by Stephen Binz. Dr. Smith promised to return to St. Mary’s in a few months for a follow-up session.
